Meet Canvas for Creativity Judge, Mary Wing To
Mary Wing To is a Leather Designer and Harness/Whip Maker based in London UK. A protégée of The Queen’s Master Saddler and Master Harness Maker at The Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, Mary is also a Masters degree graduate in Fashion Design and Technology at The London College of Fashion.
Known for her work in the Fashion, Film and Equine Industries, her creations are described as esoteric, a potent mix of drama and fashion combined with a love of all things equine, from the catwalk to the stable, from dress to dressage.
She sculpts, carves, moulds, dyes and hand-stitches leather to create outstanding luxurious products and sculptures, winning National and International awards for her workmanship including The City and Guilds Lions Award for Creative Craftsperson of the year in 2010 and winning The World of Wearable Art Supreme Award in New Zealand for her all leather creation in 2011.
Mary takes on commissions and has worked with a list of high profile clientele including Fox Searchlight Films, Eva Menz, Charlotte Dujardin OBE, Nick Skelton CBE, William & Son, Simpson London, Nicholas Oakwell Couture, B. Akerlund, Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, The Crown Equerry and her Majesty the Queen. She also works full-time as Head of UK Atelier for the iconic fashion house Chanel where she runs their UK Atelier ensuring that all client products are repaired to the brands high standards as well as training and nurturing a team of artisans.
Mary actively continues to promotes traditional leather craftsmanship within education and the industry, she is a registered member of The Society of Master Saddlers and in 2012 in recognition of her contribution Mary was appointed Freedom of the City of London, and then Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers in 2016.
